Frankie the goldfish passed away this weekend. He lasted over a year which is amazing given that our last goldfish lasted about two weeks. I honestly wonder how long goldfish are supposed to last.
My sister in law bestowed our first goldfish on us about three years ago as a Christmas present for our son. He was so excited about it. He would feed it and watch it excitedly. Unfortunately, we had no idea how to take care of a fish so it ended up dying quickly. My son was absolutely in tears when he found out. I came to the conclusion that you have to be a really sick person to give a goldfish as a present to a young kid.
So, we were pretty stunned when that same sister in law gave our son ANOTHER goldfish last year as a party favor for her son’s birthday party. We decided we were going to try and avoid a repeat of the experience we had with our first goldfish. So we studied up online.
My wife cleans the bowl once every two weeks and gradually introduces new water so as not to shock the fish. We also changed how we fed Frankie. We fed him way less, but still twice a day. We skipped feeding him on Wednesdays and Saturdays entirely.
Well, we definitely did something right because he lasted way longer than his predecessor. He brought a lot of joy to our family while he was with us. I can now also say that I can appreciate people who give goldfishes as presents.
